Probably no Portsmouth native was more surprsed than Pete Glazer on Tuesday, November 7, 1972, when freshman Democrat U.S. Senator William Belser Spong, Jr.lost his re-election bid to Republican Congressman William Lloyd Scott of Fairfax. Pete had retired from WGH on Friday May 1, 1970, to go to work for Spong as his Press Secretary. Norfolk native Joe Lowenthal (a Maury High School grad) succeeded Pete and was the southside of Hampton Roads voice of 'GH News until 1973, when Allan Pressley came back. By the way, Senator Spong (who died in October 1997) is buried at the University of Virginia Cemetery near the Alderman and McCormick Road intersection in Charlottesvile. In his post-Senate career, Spong was the dean of the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at William and Mary, and served as an interim President of ODU during the late 1980's, but he wanted to be buried on the UVA grounds, where he had been a law student during the 1940's. UVA's current President, John Casteen is also a Portsmouth native (Cradock High School Class of 1961) and was quite willing to grant the Spong family's request.
