Dear "Tidewater Forever" (and I love that handle). Your knowledge of WGH history is superb, and eventually I am going to figure out who you are. So far I can dispute only one post you have written. This one. I was there the day Dick Kidney didn't "call in". It was Dick's routine to do a "phoner" from Newport News PD between 6 and 7am, then do another from Hampton PD about 45-60 minutes later. These phoners were stacked on a tape deck and used in the morning newscasts. On the morning of Dick's death, he had not phoned by 7am. I am not sure if NNPD was asked for assistance, but, someone got the landlord of the apartment complex to enter Dick's apartment where he was found dead in the bathroom. I have a vague recollection that Joe Looper (chief engineer) was there when the body was discovered, but I'm not sure of that. But, I don't think the morning newsman went because he would have still been on air until 12:55.
